What does hail damage look like on an Austin roof?

Central Texas gets hail most springs, and some storms bring stones large enough to damage roofing. On asphalt shingles, hail leaves dark, round bruises where granules have been knocked off and the mat underneath is dented. You may see exposed black patches, cracked shingles or granules piled at the bottom of downspouts.

Metal roofs can show dents, though many dents are cosmetic and do not change how the roof sheds water. Tile can crack or chip. Vents, flashing and gutters often show dents first and give a clue about what to check on the roof.

The tricky part is that hail damage is easy to miss from the ground. A roof can look fine from the driveway and still have hundreds of hits. That is why an up-close inspection matters, and why photos of the roof from before a storm can help if you have them.

What should I do right after a storm hits my roof?

Start with safety. Stay off the roof, stay away from downed power lines and stay out of rooms with ceiling water or sagging. Then work through this list:

  1. Take photos and video of damage from the ground, including dented gutters, vents and fences.
  2. Catch active leaks inside with buckets and plastic sheeting, and move valuables.
  3. Call your insurance company to ask how to start a claim and what your deductible is.
  4. Have a roofer inspect the roof and document what they find.
  5. Keep receipts for anything you spend on emergency protection.

If water is coming in, ask a roofer about a temporary cover such as a tarp. Do not sign anything the same day under pressure. A contractor who respects you will let you read the paperwork and think it over. Keep copies of everything, because claims move more smoothly when records are clear.

How does a hail damage insurance claim work in Texas?

Every policy is different, so read yours or ask your agent. In general, you report the damage, the insurer sends an adjuster and the adjuster decides what is covered under the policy. Your roofer can document damage and give a repair estimate, but the insurer makes the coverage decision.

A few points are worth knowing. Confirm each one against your own policy and Texas rules:

  • Many Texas policies carry a separate wind and hail deductible, often a percentage of the home's insured value.
  • Policies often set a deadline for filing, so do not wait.
  • Texas has rules against contractors waiving or absorbing your deductible. Be wary of anyone who offers a free roof.
  • Some policies pay a depreciated amount first and release the rest when the work is done.

If you disagree with a decision, ask the insurer to explain it in writing. A second opinion from a roofer can help you understand the gap. We cannot promise how a claim will turn out.

Storm damage roof repair can mean replacing a few shingles or a whole roof, so there is no single price. We quote in writing after inspecting the roof. The price depends on:

  • how many slopes are damaged and how badly
  • roof size, pitch and material
  • damage to decking, gutters, vents or flashing
  • whether a repair can match the older roof or the whole roof is better replaced
  • what your insurance covers and the deductible you owe

Timing depends on how big the job is, how fast the claim moves and how busy local roofers are after a big storm. After a major hailstorm, materials and crews are in demand, so scheduling can stretch out. Ask for a realistic schedule and a plan in case more rain arrives. If the roof is beyond repair, our roof replacement page explains what a full job involves.

When should I call, and how do I avoid storm chasers?

Call when you see damage, or after any storm with hail or strong wind, even if you cannot see a problem. Early documentation helps. After a big storm, out-of-town crews often show up in neighborhoods knocking on doors. Some are honest, and some are gone when the work gets difficult.

Protect yourself with a few simple checks:

  • Ask for a local address and a business you can verify.
  • Ask to see proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation.
  • Get the scope, materials and warranty terms in writing.
  • Do not pay the full amount up front.
  • Be careful with any contract that gives the contractor control of your insurance claim.

For a closer look at the roof itself, a roof inspection is a calm first step. Our Austin roofing page has more on how we work, or you can call (512) 555-0120.

Questions about roofing in Austin

How soon after a hailstorm should I get my roof checked?

As soon as it is safe. Early documentation helps a claim, and a small crack or bruise can become a leak with the next rain. Many policies also set a filing deadline, so waiting can cost you. Take photos from the ground first, then ask a roofer to look at the roof up close.

Can hail damage a roof without causing a leak?

Yes. Hail can bruise shingles and knock off granules without making a hole. The roof may not leak right away, but the damaged shingles wear faster and fail sooner. That is why a roof can look fine and still need work. A close inspection finds damage that is easy to miss from the ground.

Will you waive my insurance deductible?

No. Texas has rules against contractors waiving, absorbing or rebating a deductible, and we will not offer that. Be careful with anyone who does. Your deductible is part of your policy. We can give you a written estimate, and you can use it in talks with your insurance company.

Do you deal with the insurance company for me?

The claim is between you and your insurer. We can inspect the roof, take photos and write a repair estimate that you can share. We are roofers, not adjusters, and we cannot promise a claim outcome. Be wary of anyone who asks you to hand over control of your claim.

Is a metal roof dented by hail still covered?

That depends on your policy. Some policies treat cosmetic dents on metal differently from damage that affects how the roof performs. Read the wording on cosmetic damage and ask your agent how it applies. A roofer can tell you whether dents are only surface marks or have damaged seams and panels.
